In Notability you can fill out forms, make outlines, annotate documents, add captions, and type reports. There are many keyboard shortcuts to simplify taking notes.
Typing Text
- Click
to enter typing mode.
- Click the screen to place the cursor on a line. Currently all text is left aligned.
Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Text
There are several ways to cut, copy, and paste selected text.
- Use keyboard shortcuts:
- Cut: command+x
- Copy: command+c
- Paste: command+v
- Click "Cut", "Copy", or "Paste" from the menu that appears after doing one of these things:
- Tap your trackpad with two fingers at once.
- Tap your trackpad with one finger while holding down the control key.
- Click "Edit" in the menu bar at the top of your Mac's screen.
- If you have a mouse with left and right buttons, click the right button.
Undoing and Redoing Actions
- To undo an action, use command-z or click "Edit > Undo" from the app's menu bar.
- To redo an action, use command-shift-z, or "Edit > Redo" from the app's menu bar.
Highlighting Text in Typing Mode
- Click
to enter typing mode.
- To select a word, double-click it.
- To select multiple words, click-and-drag over them.
- To highlight, right-click selected text or use the command-control-h keyboard shortcut.
- To change the highlight color or remove highlighting, control-click highlighted text and click "Edit Highlight".
Styling Text
A type styling panel lets you change the font, size, color, and style of your type.
- Click
to open the styling panel.
- Select font, size, style, outline, and color from this panel.
- To set a default font, click "Notability > Preferences…" at the top of your Mac's screen.
Text Boxes
Text boxes can be placed anywhere in a note. They're particularly useful when filling out forms or annotating PDFs and PowerPoints.
To add a text box, place your cursor where you want to add the text box. Then, click "Insert Text Box" from the menu that appears after doing one of these things:
- Two-finger tap: Tap your trackpad with two fingers at once.
- Control-click: Tap your trackpad with one finger while holding down the control key.
- Right-click: If you have a mouse with left and right buttons, click the right button.
- Click "Edit" in the menu bar at the top of your Mac's screen.
To move or resize the text box:
- To select a text box, click it with the typing tool selected.
- Use a drag handle to resize the text box.
- Use the rectangle at the top of the box to move the text box.
- To delete a text box, click on it and then press your keyboard's Delete key.
Checklists
To add a checklist, select from the lists menu in the styling panel.
Outlines
These are a great way to organize your thoughts and arrange information.
- In the styling panel, select an outline type.
- To add a bulleted or numbered line, pressing the return key.
- To indent a bulleted or numbered line, press the tab key.
- To outdent a line, place the cursor on the line you want to outdent and press shift-tab.
Adding Text
You can also drag and drop text into a note.
- Select text from another source such as a webpage.
- Click and hold on the text while moving the cursor to the open note.
- Release the cursor when it is over the open note.
- The selected content will be added to the note.
