Handwriting and Grouping Ink

Use ink to write notes, draw diagrams, sign documents, annotate PDFs, and more.

Adding Handwriting

  1. Select note-btn-handwriting.svg or note-btn-highlighter.svg.
    (On iPhone, tap the currently selected tool first.)
  2. If you previously using Pencil, tap Pen in the popover menu. 
  3. Start writing or highlighting anywhere with your finger, Apple Pencil, or stylus. 

Changing Ink Color, Width, or Style (Dotted and Dashed Lines)

  • On Mac or iPad, select note-btn-handwriting.svg or note-btn-highlighter.svg again.
      • Access dotted and dashed lines by swiping over to the second pen styles page. 
  • On iPhone, tap .

Erasing Handwriting

  1. Select .
  2. Tap a handwritten stroke to erase it.

Adding Favorites

Undoing and Redoing Changes

Undo and Redo gestures can be enabled under Notability Settings > Gestures 

To Undo:

  • Tap to undo your latest change.
  • 2 Finger Tap (if enabled): Tap the screen with two fingers. 
  • 3 Finger Swipe (if enabled):
    • Double-tap the screen twice using three fingers.
    • Swipe left on the screen with three fingers.

To Redo:

  • Press and hold to access the Redo button.
  • 2 Finger Tap (if enabled): Tap the screen with three fingers. 
  • 3 Finger Swipe (if enabled): Swipe right on the screen with three fingers.

Editing Handwriting

  1. Select the Lasso tool.
    Optionally, choose the Lasso tool again to change the selection style.
  2. Circle the handwriting you'd like to edit.
    • Tip: Transform an existing line into a dotted or dashed line by going to Style and then selecting a dotted or dashed line style.
  3. To move handwriting, tap/click and drag it.
  4. To restyle, cut, copy, or delete handwriting, tap inside the dotted line.
  5. To paste handwriting, tap and hold at a new location after using cut or copy.
  6. To resize handwriting, place two fingers in the selected area and pinch or expand.
  7. To rotate handwriting, place two fingers in the selected area and rotate.

Grouping Ink  

Select handwriting and group them as a single item. Grouped elements can be moved, scaled, and rotated like media objects. 

  1. Select the Lasso tool and draw around the separate ink that you'd like to combine together.
  2. Click/tap inside the drawn circle and a menu will appear. 
  3. Select "Group." You can now make changes (move, scale, rotate) to the items as one.
